Feedback is a double-edged sword for dance and performing arts Studio Owners. It can guide your studio growth, but it can also feel overwhelming, especially when it’s harsh or unexpected.

Over the years (as a once studio owner for over a decade), I’ve had my fair share of angry parents, ungrateful students and entitled staff who certainly did NOT learn the art of helpful feedback. But in that negativity, I learned how to separate reactive, energy-draining comments from strategic insights that truly help studios thrive.

Take the 1-star Google review. Oh the joys...

Years ago, after a show where we offered a simple, low-cost $20 digital download video, one parent was furious it didn’t have multiple camera angles. Their review stung but most families were happy, and that single voice didn’t define the experience.

Or the show week when my mother was in palliative care. I was emotionally drained but still committed to my students and team. One staff member, upset about recognition, sent a harsh email after the show even after knowing my emotional state that week. It hurt (and bewildered me), but I realised feedback doesn’t always reflect reality; sometimes it’s more about the giver than you.

Key lessons for Performing Arts Studio Owners:

  1. Collect preemptive feedback. Before launching new classes, programs, or community initiatives, survey your students, families, or industry peers. Ask what they want, when they want it and how they want to participate.

  2. Protect your energy. Not all feedback deserves immediate attention. Give yourself space after concerts or high-stress events before responding.

  3. Focus on strategic insights, not reactive criticism. Track patterns and trends across your community rather than reacting to the loudest voices.

Feedback can inform your concert planning, class schedules, and studio culture. It’s also a tool to build resilience and sharpen leadership. By listening thoughtfully and strategically, you can grow profitable dance and performing arts studios, manage talent effectively, and lead with confidence without crumbling under negativity.

Remember: take what’s useful, let go of the rest and keep creating the magic your students and families come for.
